Join our dedicated team of Abandoned Mine Closure Workers!
Environmental Protection Services (EPS) is seeking highly motivated and skilled Welders to play a crucial role in safeguarding the public from the hazards associated with abandoned mines. Abandoned mine sites can pose significant risks, including water contamination, acid mine drainage, and public safety concerns. As an Abandoned Mine Closure Welder, your fabrication and welding expertise will be instrumental in building critical structural barriers—mitigating these risks while protecting the associated habitat.
Why This Position is Unique (Finding the Right Fit):
This is not a standard shop welding job. During times when you are not actively fabricating or welding, you must be willing to jump in and perform general labor, operate heavy equipment, or hike heavy materials and gear into rugged project sites alongside the rest of the crew. We know this level of cross-functional, heavy manual labor is not common for a specialized welder. The ideal candidate is someone who grew up on a farm, ranch, or working for a family business—someone who learned how to weld, but is fully accustomed to wearing many hats and doing everything else in between to get the job done. We are looking for someone with grit and adaptability—it must be the right fit for you.
Responsibilities:
Primary Duty: Perform on-site MIG welding and custom steel fabrication to construct specialized mine closures, particularly heavy-duty Bat Gates and mine hazard safety fencing.
Accurately measure, cut, and prepare steel materials and structural components for installation in rugged, remote environments.
When not actively welding, willingly assist with general labor, site prep, equipment operation, and the physical transport/hiking of heavy materials to remote job sites.
Conduct field investigations and assessments of abandoned mine sites to determine fabrication requirements.
Participate in the safe and effective closure of abandoned mines, employing additional techniques like PUF (Polyurethane Foam) Closures and Mechanized Backfill.
Qualifications:
Primary Requirement: Proven professional welding experience, with a strong, demonstrable proficiency in MIG welding.
Solid experience in steel fabrication and cutting (using torches, plasma cutters, and standard metalworking tools).
Minimum of 2 years of experience in construction, welding, or related heavy labor.
Strong willingness to learn the specialized regulations and best practices for abandoned mine closure.
Ability to work outdoors in challenging, uneven terrain and extreme weather conditions.
Excellent physical fitness and stamina for physically demanding tasks, including hiking with gear, lifting heavy steel components, and operating machinery.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a specialized, tight-knit team.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to travel extensively and camp/work in remote locations throughout Nevada.
Benefits:
Competitive salary and benefits package (including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance)
Opportunity to make a significant, tangible impact on public safety.
Gain valuable, highly specialized experience in abandoned mine closure techniques.
Be part of a team dedicated to protecting public health and preserving habitats for local wildlife.
Potential for professional development and career advancement within EPS.
