If you're looking for a specific animal, check on PetFinder https://www.petfinder.com/

You can search animals in rescues and shelters by animal, breed, age, gender, etc. You can even set it up to notify you if an animal you are seeking becomes available. There are local rescues, but few people know about them, this makes it easy to find local animals in those rescues as well as the local shelters. You can also search areas farther away if you don't find what you're looking for. Many areas (such as Sacramento) are overwhelmed with massive amounts of animals that end up being put to sleep because there are so many backyard breeders there. A simple road trip can save a life and give you the furry buddy you always wanted. Even further away places sometimes will be willing to send adoptable animals to you through way of a rescue train.

So, if you want a new pet and aren't finding what you are looking for, check on there instead of padding the pockets of the unscrupulous.
