My best recollection identifies this as an adapter that fits a floor jack. It cradles an air-cooled VW engine by the crankcase to ease installation/removal. The post that fits into the floor jack saddle holder is 30mm in diameter.

I can't find anyone selling these any more, so maybe I'm wrong and it's just a giant walnut cracker. In any event it's 50 bucks.
