The is the headboard, footboard, side rails, platform, and plywood. The plywood gives the mattress a lot of firmness, but you can put a box spring on instead of the plywood in you like.
The frame was purposefully made slightly larger in both length and width compared to a standard queen. It makes getting the mattress in and out of the frame much easier, and gives an enclosed “shelf” for little objects/books that you want to keep by the bed at night. It is very useful, but you need to recognize that the mattress will slide around because of it. If you have little kids like we did, stuff blankets or pillows in the side so they don’t break a foot.
You will see exposed screws on the headboard and foot board. I really liked the look so I didn’t bother to close the heads. This would be very easy to do if you wanted to.
